LEXINGTON, KY (Sept. 20, 2013) – The Sporting Art Auction, a new company formed by Keeneland Association and Cross Gate Gallery, will host an inaugural Sporting Art Auction in November 2013 at the historic Keeneland Sales Pavilion.
The auction will include approximately 200 high-quality lots focusing on modern British and American sporting painters and sculptors in addition to select works by renowned 19th century artists. The auction collection is being curated by Cross Gate owner Greg Ladd, whose Lexington-based gallery is widely regarded for its sporting art expertise.
“This Sporting Art Auction has the potential to become the most important of its kind in the world,” said Ladd. “We have all the right elements to make it a success—a world-class venue in Keeneland which provides in-house expertise in conducting major auctions, and the ability to reach the most enthusiastic sporting art collectors in the world through Keeneland’s racing and sales clientele.”
Ladd already has successfully secured two major pieces for the November auction, including ‘Blue Prince’, a 26 1/2” x 39 1/2” painting by Sir Alfred Munnings, commissioned by Thoroughbred owner and breeder Walter Jeffords. Munnings, who died in 1959, is regarded as one of the world’s finest equine painters. The auction also will include a 7’ x 17’ mural commissioned by Charles W. Bidwill, Jr, for Sportsman’s Park in 1976 done by the late LeRoy Neiman, an American artist known for his brightly colored paintings depicting athletes and sporting events.
“Greg is widely recognized as one of the world’s experts on sporting art, so we are fortunate to partner with someone of his caliber on this project,” said Walt Robertson, Keeneland’s Vice President of Sales. “The uniqueness of Keeneland’s proximity to an influential clientele allows the art to be showcased for an extended period of time to a captive audience of sporting art enthusiasts.”
Keeneland’s proceeds from this art auction will benefit its non-profit initiatives, including the Keeneland Library Foundation.
As a pulse point for a significant global business, Keeneland’s Thoroughbred auctions draw the world’s top Thoroughbred owners and breeders to its fall sales and race meeting. Its September Yearling Sale and November Breeding Stock Sale draw buyers from nearly every state and more than 50 countries–representing Europe, the Middle East, Central and South America, Australia, Asia, South Africa, Russia and India. Last year, Keeneland’s auction sales totaled $410 million while its 32 days of live racing drew more than 500,000 racing fans.
