Roman, a product of Joseph E. Widener’s Elmendorf Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, was a crack sprinter at two, three, and four. Roman won 18 of his 40 career starts, including nine stakes events. He accomplished his greatest feat at age four in Belmont Park’s 1941 Fall Highweight Handicap in which he carried top weight of 140 pounds and set a six-furlong track record of 1:10. He retired to a full book of mares at Elmendorf Farm in 1942. His 53 stakes winners included juvenile champions Hasty Road and Romanita. His daughters produced such champions as Roman Brother and Tom Rolfe.
