These scenes derived from John Frederick Herring Sr.’s paintings The Start and The Run, which were printed in London earlier in the century. William Henry Buck evidently accepted a commission from New Orleans residents Samuel Henry Buck and his wife, Ann Fleming Buck, to use their likenesses riding the two prominent horses in both paintings. Samuel Buck was born in Versailles, Kentucky. After service in the Confederate Army, he became a successful cotton merchant in New Orleans.
